It's 1am.

I was in my room rummaging quietly through my drawers trying to get my stuff ready for tomorrow's day trip, when I heard footsteps in the hall.

A very sleepy, displeased Blair, announcing "I had a really bad nightmare, and I'm scared."

She looked so young and soft and vulnerable. It was really sweet and cute, despite her sleepy, disoriented displeasure. She had a bad dream, got out of bed and looked for me for comfort. I took her back to bed and cuddled with her for a bit until she fell back asleep.

This is what it's all about.

Feeling happy and curatorial this week, I restarted Wedding Wednesday and Footwear Friday on Bsky/Tumblr (and will get back to Miniature Monday as well): they've always been opportunities to practice clear but elegant label-writing, nd now I need that more than I have in several years.

I'm also psyched to eventually meet up with the Western NY Costuming Community after so many years of just not being near any groups. They're having a literary-themed picnic in early June and that will be mere weeks after I move out there, so I CANNOT try to make something, but at the same time I am so itching to do it. No!!! By now I don't think I have anything historical that fits ... Well, actually, I have a ca. 1908 blouse I made for everyday wear (except it looks way too frumpy as modern dress), and surely I could put together a walking skirt and be like "this is for The Secret Garden". And just be without a corset because the blouse is loose enough for it not to be too horrendously obvious.

Also having my usual "moving to a new place, is this when I finally get started with the SCA?" feelings. Thescorre has a lot going on.

What I've recently finished reading:

In eyeball, The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow. Time-loop novel about a medieval historian and the lady knight he's obsessed with, in an alternate world that is not quite our England; one of you called it "sort of Arthuriana" and I guess it is, though that sort of is important. In a way it reminded me of The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August as much of the novel is the characters gradually figuring out that these same things are happening again, and then trying to take advantage of this knowledge to make the next loop better. Unfortunately, in this case the source of the time loop has very clear, firm aims, and does not want to be thwarted by the mere pawns acting out the story that is destined to be enshrined in the country's lore. I liked it a lot, especially as the layers unfolded, though actually I was most interested in the villain of the piece and would like to have had more of that story!

In audio, All These Worlds by Dennis E. Taylor, the third Bobiverse book. I'm really liking these, although they could use some closer editing to avoid repetition of things we already know. It's an interesting inversion of Adrian Tchaikovsky's "How can we see the other as a person?" in that the viewpoint characters, the Bobs, are cloned brain patterns from a now-dead engineer which run on computers installed in spaceships; though within the narrative they are unquestionably people, other humans don't necessarily see them that way. And yet as they are enabling and directing the expansion of humanity into space, they're the segment of humanity making first contact with the other sentient species of the galaxy, and they're the ones who have to handle the related decisions. The structure of these books, with the multiplicity of Bobs and their storylines, means that all the different cases can be handled: the Stone Age civilization, the early-industrial civilization, the possibly advanced civilization that no longer exists, the advanced civilization that presents a terrifying threat. And as some humans fight against the idea that the Bobs are human, some Bobs work to reclaim as much of their humanity as possible. There are some deep philosophical questions one can tease out of these books - but I don't think that's the author's intent, and they are enjoyable reads just as fun science fiction.

What I've recently finished watching:

We enjoyed the Netflix "nature documentary" miniseries The Dinosaurs; quotes are because I think it's basically all CGI. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, it's a dramatic tour of prehistory, from the first proto-dinos to the asteroid that ended it all. It does a good job of telling individual "stories" of the various dinosaurs looking for mates, protecting their young, and doing their best to eat and not be eaten.

Some positivity.

+ I'm feeling a lot better. For the past couple of weeks, I would cry at least once a day, usually at work. Hours a day, tears sliding silently down my face while I worked on my clients. These past couple of days, no crying at all. My mind has not been crowded with nasty thoughts, like a demon whispering to me trying to weaken me so it could possess me.

+ Gabe, our DnD group's DM and also Blair's brother-in-law, contacted me directly (!) which is pretty cool because while we get along well, we don't really talk much directly to each other when we're not playing DnD. He asked me how much a massage costs at my work, and I offered to do it for him direct, at home with my own table, for cheaper instead. So I've got an appointment with him this week.

+ It was incredibly stressful and time consuming, but I did my taxes (I'm getting money back this year instead of having to pay!) and I secured some new health insurance for myself. It's affordable, and honestly not that great, but it sure is something.

+ I've been sitting here in the lab with Blair, on her college campus, keeping her company while she works on a project. I've burned through the entire season of Wonder Man, which I hadn't even heard about until I saw it by chance listed on the streaming website I use. It's really good, and I really like it.

+ Things are improving a little between Blair and I. She's not exactly being as affectionate as I was getting used to, but after a huge break-down in front of her the other night (and her being very understanding and supportive of my depressive episode) we at least feel like we're connecting a little better. I guess that's the thing about rock bottom, is that once you're there, the only way to go is up.

+ Voted today!

I use the same name everywhere so I am [personal profile] beatrice_otter on AO3. Treats are awesome.

I would rather get a story you were happy with than "well, she said she liked x, so I guess I have to do x even though I don't like x and/or am not inspired that way." This letter is long with lots of suggestions and preferences if you find it helpful, but feel free to ignore it if it is not helpful. I'm fairly easy to please; I've been doing ficathons for a long time and am usually very happy with my gifts.

The most important thing for me in a fic is that the characters are well-written and recognizably themselves. Even when I don't like a character, I don't go in for character-bashing. If nothing else, if the rest of this letter is too much or my kinks don't fit yours, just concentrate on writing a story with everyone in character and good spelling and grammar and I will almost certainly love what you come up with.

I have an embarrassment squick, which makes humor kind of hit-or-miss sometimes. The kind of humor where someone does something embarrassing and the audience is laughing at them makes me uncomfortable. On the other hand, the kind of humor where the audience is laughing with the characters I really enjoy.
