Fic: that I could call my very own

[community profile] justmarriedexchange fics have revealed, and so I can tell you that I wrote a Trip/T'Pol fic! My recip, [personal profile] lionessvalenti, had several suggestions for canon-divergent AUs, which happen to be one of my favorite types of story to write--pick a canon event, tweak it slightly, and see what happens from there. And also, I love Vulcans, and have Opinions on the way Star Trek: Enterprise handled them, and this fic gave me lots of opportunities to explore all of that. I really enjoyed writing it, and I hope you enjoy reading it!

Title: that I could call my very own
Author: [personal profile] beatrice_otter
Fandom: Star Trek: Enterprise
Pairing: Trip/T'Pol
Written for: [personal profile] lionessvalenti in Just Married Exchange 2025
Word count: 14k
Summary:

T'Pol figures out something is wrong with her mother before leaving for Vulcan. She and Trip decide how to face the problem together.

"Maybe we're coming at this from the wrong angle," Trip said. "We're worried about what's happening on Vulcan with your mother, and trying to figure out the best way to handle that. But what if you looked at this long-term? What do you want your life to be like, a decade from now? Two decades from now? Then work backwards and figure out what we should be doing now to work towards that."

AN: This is a very minor worldbuilding note, but in English, there are gendered terms for "people who dedicate themselves to a religious life"—monk for men and nun for women. That is not the case for all languages; in Greek, "monachos" is used for both men and women. I'm going to assume that Vulcan doesn't have different words for different genders, but uses the same word for both.

[personal profile] sixbeforelunch provided a lot of excellent brainstorming and beta help, as is usual for my Star Trek fics.

***

"Ensign Sato, are there any remaining communications difficulties?"

The Human shook her head. "None that I'm aware of—I've got a lot of things coming through from Starfleet and the general Earth communications network, both stuff that's been waiting while we were out of range and congratulations for our triumphant return. Why?"

T'Pol debated. On the one hand, it was possible that neither her mother nor any other family member nor any former colleague had sent her a message while Enterprise was in the Expanse. Ensign Sato was very busy and had a great many tasks to perform before she could be debriefed by Starfleet and begin her well-deserved vacation. T'Pol had no desire to add to those tasks if there was nothing wrong. And it was certainly true that being out of contact had been a welcome reprieve; T'Pol was not in favor with the Vulcan High Command, nor with her family, and it had been a relief not to have to deal with anyone's disapproval.

But she had always known that would be merely a temporary reprieve, unless she chose to abandon all claim to Vulcan entirely. )

A mish-mash of things:

I saw a beautiful movie recently called Wolfwalkers. Just a gorgeous little animated movie that I definitely recommend. The art was such a breath of fresh air.

Almost done with Superman also; I watch movies in bits and pieces sometimes, especially if they're on the longer side.

I don't work Thursday, Friday or Sunday, and since Oktoberfest is this weekend, my work is going to be closed on Saturday, giving me a four-day weekend!

Oktoberfest is famously a really huge deal in La Crosse, but like. I do not plan to go anywhere near it if I can handle it, because it is a literal nightmare. Blair's friends who have lived in this area for awhile recounted Oktoberfests past, and it doesn't sound great. This is a college town and we live downtown, and there are three different campuses around us. According to the tales, there are hundreds of college kids just blind drunk all the time, everywhere, sleeping on the sidewalks and staggering in the streets. Car accidents around every corner. Puke and trash and abandoned clothing everywhere, people toileting in the street, getting into fights, even breaking into peoples' homes and cars. That's a nah from me dawg.

They're college kids who are drinking all the time already anyway. I don't understand why they need to get so belligerent and idiotic for these specific four days.

It runs Thursday through Sunday. Blair has to work and go to class Thursday and Friday, but other than that we do not plan to be out and about except for Friday evening, when her parents have invited us over for dinner (in another city). Saturday we're driving all the way to Rochester, Minnesota to do some shopping (the nearest Trader Joe's is over an hour away, but we're going, and we're returning home with a HUGE haul), and then Sunday we've got DnD at our place.

I received my first paycheck from my new job, which felt great, but I still haven't figured out the licensing situation yet. I should, uh. Probably get to that.

I have been trying to nurture the small smoldering spark of creativity within me, hoping to write something soon. I really want to contribute to Fandom Gift Basket.

I've been feeling very... domestic. I work less than Blair does. I'm home more, so I do more to care for the apartment. I'm always vacuuming and doing loads of laundry. I cook a lot, do the dishes, take out the trash, and pack her lunches for her, which I very much enjoy. I never imagined myself living this sort of life, but I really like taking care of her and of our home.

But! I feel like I cook a lot of the same things over and over, just because there are certain dishes we're quite happy with. I'd love to branch out and start doing something different! If anyone's got any favorite recipes they'd like to share, I'd love to check 'em out!

wednesday thursday

What I've recently finished watching:

Wednesday season 2, and I enjoyed it a lot! Okay, there were parts I did not enjoy nearly as much as others; I could have done without the zombie gore and Pugsley in general, and Enid's new boyfriend drama as well. On the other hand! (Which I guess is Thing, no pun intended!) Here are some things I particularly loved, behind a cut because they are very mildly spoilery for S2, more spoilery for S1: )

A spooky thing, for the upcoming season:

Ever since we moved in, I have heard noises at night. I told Blair about it the first time, and many times after, but she never hears it. They are the unmistakable sounds of someone running back and forth down the hall of our floor, and every so often I will hear banging too, like someone is pounding on a door somewhere. Whenever I hear it, I'll hurry over to the front door and look through the peephole. Then when I can't see anyone through that, I'll crack the door and look out into the hall. There's never anyone there.

Pause.

Yesterday, lots of things happened in our building.

When I opened the door to take the dog out, there was a tall woman standing there in the hall, looking completely off her face. She wore a tiny tank top and short short boxer briefs. They were inside-out. I muttered the thing I always mutter when I encounter someone unexpectedly: "Oh, sorry." She stared at me. Grunted. Turned and staggered toward the door to the stairwell.

Once we were outside and I was trying to let the dog pee, I noticed a man come out one of the doors. A very sketchy man, carrying a beat up plastic yellow bag. He walked across the street to a half-built garage, did something over there. Then he crossed back diagonally toward the dumpsters in our parking lot, and did something over there, too. I steered the dog back over toward the grass. I heard footsteps, and thought he was following me, but he disappeared back into the building. All the people I have told are pretty certain his sketchy behavior was drug-related. La Crosse is famous for alcoholism being a religion, and its impressive number of meth users. Drug use is so bad in this area that there is Narcan on the wall in businesses next to the fire extinguisher and the AED.

Anyway. Later, when Blair and I took the dog out again, as we were coming in, we encounter a woman screaming in the lobby. She's getting in the elevator, and one of our neighbors is trying to talk to her. "I do NOT need your help!" she's screaming. "You didn't want to help me before! Your help is worthless to me!" The floor? Covered in blood. I didn't immediately know where she was bleeding from, but apparently she had a massive gash on her foot/lower leg. Like the elevator looked like someone was murdered in it. There were trails of blood all over the floor, tracked across the lobby.

We, and several other neighbors we have gotten to know, all gathered for a huddle there in the lobby. One of the ladies knew who that woman was. We had the story from the neighbor she had screamed at. We wondered what we should do: we couldn't just leave blood everywhere like that. What an incredible biohazard! It was decided that one of us would call the non-emergency police number, so one of the guys did, while someone else tried to get ahold of the building manager and the maintenance guy, and the rest of us talked about it and also stood guard by the garage to warn everyone who came in that there was blood everywhere and to be careful.

A police officer showed up. He spoke to me, to Blair. He spoke to the guy who called, and to the woman who knew the woman we called out. The trail of blood led straight to her unit, but the woman would not open her door for the police officer. I was up there on our floor (of course this spazz of a woman lives on our floor) because I was bringing the dog back up.

Back downstairs, we were discussing what we knew about the woman. Apparently she has been spotted around the building high as shit, and had just gotten out of prison recently. Conversation turned toward the building itself. It's brand new. It opened in May of this year, just a few months before we moved in. Like, it's brand new. But apparently, someone has already died here. That wasn't enough to bother me, really, but the rest of the story really had me intrigued.

Resume.

This person died on our floor, of an overdose. Before he died, he was heard for some time running back and forth down the hall, looking for help. He would pound on random doors, except no one would open up for him.

A very eerie coincidence, I'm sure.

Still, every night I listen for the running and the knocking noises, and every night I hurry to the door and try to catch whoever it is, but I never spot anybody.

wednesday reads

What I recently finished reading:

A reread of Velocity Weapon by Megan E. O'Keefe - here's my original review from 2020:

Space opera that reminds me a bit of Imperial Radch smushed with the Expanse, though it doesn't feel like it's actually inspired by either. There's a sentient spaceship and a culture which dominates the universe and controls the gates which allow passage between worlds (which were invented using a mysterious technology that may have come from another civilization), and generally modern SF style views of gender and sexuality (the main characters, siblings, have two fathers, and there's a character who uses 'they' pronouns, presumably nonbinary). The story mostly follows Sanda, a 'gunnery sergeant' [this seemed odd to me for various reasons - she seems to be an actual officer, not a noncom, but I guess military ranks in this far future world are different?] who wakes up after a battle alone, on board a deserted enemy warship, which tells her that it's 230 years after the battle and that both sides' planets have been destroyed. Other POVs are Sanda's brother, Biran, who has been recently elevated to the political elite of their society, and Jules, a young gangster girl on a planet far away, whose narrative seems to have little to do with the main story until the very end when things are connected in order to set up the next book. I liked it a lot, though I felt that after the first few big reveals (which were great!) things dragged for a while before rushing to a climax that quickly went on to a cliffhanger.

Rereading my review, I guess I still agree with it! I'm sadly appalled that I forgot so many of the spoilery details in the intervening 5 years.

But I'm on to the next book in the series, Chaos Vector...

I just finished the first (and currently only) season of The Paper, which is sort of a sequel to The Office, and I enjoyed it! Maybe it took a few episodes for me to really get into it, but I ended up really liking the characters.

I also finished reading Sorcerer to the Crown by Zen Cho, which I can highly recommend as something that sort of blends magical stories with Bridgerton era England.

Had a DnD session tonight and I took a slightly more active role than in the average session, which always makes me feel a little nervous, but it was great.

Blair is feeling a little under the weather. Or was, I guess, as she's feeling a lot better today. I went with her to get her hair cut, and while we were out, we also had lunch, poked around in a crystal shop, and did the grocery shopping.

She's going away this weekend for a mandatory class field trip, where her mycology class is traveling all the way to the University of Notre Dame, (like five hours away) from Friday morning until Sunday night to forage for mushrooms and then study them in the research laboratory. I'm not sure why they have to travel so far to do that, as there are tons of mushrooms right here in La Crosse, and she has a whole tackle box full of like fifteen different varieties to prove it, but whatever. I'll miss her while she's gone and I'll be worried the entire time. They're carpooling (I can't vouch for how her classmates or professors drive) and staying in research dorms (I don't trust other people) and she likely won't have all that much time to check in and let me know how they're getting on.

I will have to distract myself this weekend, which means hey, maybe I'll actually get a little writing done for the first time in what feels like a year.
